Classic Grilled Cheese

Crispy, buttery grilled cheese with melted perfection inside. Perfect paired with tomato soup.

⏱️ 10 minutes 👥 1 serving

Ingredients

  • 2 slices of bread (white, sourdough, or whole wheat)
  • 2 slices of cheese (cheddar, American, or your favorite)
  • 2 tablespoons butter, softened
  • Optional: pinch of garlic powder

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. You want it hot enough to toast the bread but not so hot that it burns before the cheese melts.
  2. Butter one side of each slice of bread generously. If using garlic powder, sprinkle a small pinch on the buttered side.
  3. Place one slice of bread, butter-side down, in the heated skillet.
  4. Quickly layer the cheese slices on top of the bread in the pan, then place the second slice of bread on top, butter-side up.
  5. Cook for 3-4 minutes until the bottom is golden brown and crispy. Press down gently with a spatula to help the cheese melt.
  6. Carefully flip the sandwich and cook for another 2-3 minutes until the second side is golden brown and the cheese is fully melted.
  7. Remove from heat, let it rest for a minute, then slice diagonally and serve immediately.

Chef's Tips

Perfect Golden Crust: Use softened butter and spread it all the way to the edges of the bread for even browning.

Cheese Choice: Mix two types of cheese for more complex flavor. Try cheddar with mozzarella or American with Swiss.

Temperature Control: Medium heat is key. Too high and the bread burns before the cheese melts; too low and you won't get that crispy texture.

Perfect Pairing: Serve with a bowl of hot tomato soup for the ultimate comfort food combination.
