Homestyle Oatmeal
Warm, comforting oatmeal that's both wholesome and satisfying. A nourishing breakfast that will keep you energized throughout the morning.
Ingredients
- 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup whole milk (or your preferred milk)
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons brown sugar or honey (optional)
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 tablespoons butter
Toppings (Optional)
- Fresh berries (blueberries, strawberries, or raspberries)
- Sliced bananas
- Chopped nuts (walnuts, almonds, or pecans)
- Drizzle of maple syrup or honey
- A sprinkle of brown sugar
- Raisins or dried cranberries
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the water and milk. Bring to a gentle boil over medium-high heat.
- Once boiling, stir in the oats and salt. Reduce the heat to medium-low.
- Simmer the oatmeal uncovered, stirring occasionally, for about 10-12 minutes. The oats should be tender and the mixture should be creamy but not too thick.
- Add the cinnamon, vanilla extract, and brown sugar or honey if using. Stir well to combine.
- Add the butter and stir until melted and incorporated. This makes the oatmeal extra creamy and rich.
- Remove from heat and let stand for 1-2 minutes to thicken slightly.
- Divide the oatmeal between two bowls. Top with your choice of fresh fruit, nuts, and additional sweetener as desired.
- Serve immediately while hot and enjoy your wholesome breakfast.
Tips for Perfect Oatmeal
Liquid ratio: For creamier oatmeal, use more milk and less water. For lighter oatmeal, use more water and less milk. Adjust to your preference.
Don't rush it: Cooking oatmeal slowly over medium-low heat produces the creamiest texture. Quick cooking at high heat can make it gummy.
Stir occasionally: This prevents sticking and ensures even cooking, but don't stir constantly as this can make the oatmeal gluey.
Make it ahead: Oatmeal reheats beautifully. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days and reheat with a splash of milk.
Steel-cut variation: For steel-cut oats, use a 3:1 liquid to oats ratio and simmer for 25-30 minutes. They have a chewier texture and nuttier flavor.
